How to reclaim your sacred life (after trauma left you broken)

Trauma can rip up your life and scatter the pieces, but know that it never defines the deepest truth of who you are. Underneath every wound, beyond every survival strategy, there’s a quiet place that always belonged to you, even in your most tumultuous moments, even when you weren't aware of it. That place is sacred and it waits with infinite patience for your return.

Healing begins with one clear decision: to treat your present life as precious. From that moment on, every thoughtful choice becomes an act of restoration. A walk beneath an open sky, a slow, conscious breath, a nourishing meal, a poem, a prayer, your feet upon bare earth. Moments that may appear ordinary, yet in creating them, you shape a life rooted in presence rather than fear.

Anything can become a meditation, every act can be made meaningful if it’s done with presence and gratitude. Everything, from packing a lunchbox to sweeping a yard, to eating a strawberry, to sanding and painting a deck; allowing your body and mind to focus on doing that one task to the best of your ability makes it sacred. The sacred rarely arrives with noise and excitement, fight and conflict; it reveals itself gradually in stillness.

When you pause long enough to hear your own heartbeat and notice your deepening breath, wisdom naturally rises. You become more active, less reactive, your body remembers how to soften. Your spirit remembers how to hope. Your mind remembers that peace inside that is authentically you. And this peace grows stronger through practice.

Healing isn’t measured by speed. There’s not one date on which all of yourself becomes healed, there is not a measure of how healed you are that runs in months or years and there is never a day when healing is ‘finished’. We’re part of something bigger, part of the infinite, and nature shows us a wiser rhythm. The way a tide reaches the shore one wave at a time, where trees embrace every season, unfurling and receding, without urgency, always in faith that spring will come. Dawn arrives, day after reassuring day. Your own unfolding has the same quiet intelligence. Be open to receive it.

Creativity offers a further path to wholeness, one I’ve fully embraced. Writing gathers scattered thoughts into meaning and understanding. Painting gives colour to feelings and experiences that are beyond words. Music, gardening, cooking, sewing or shaping clay, whatever you’re moved to do, all invite the soul to express itself. Beauty becomes more than something to admire, it becomes something you create, it becomes what you have created simply because you have created it, and in creating it, you rediscover yourself, parts of you and your life reflected back, your heartbreak, your hope, your childish dreams, your shining soul.

Your presence brings peace wherever you go. A sacred life grows through simple habits. Begin each morning with breath that fills your body with calm. Walk with curiosity even as you progress towards your destination. Rest in the sight of beauty. Speak words of kindness to yourself. Close each evening with gratitude for one beautiful moment from the day. These practices are anchors that strengthen your heart and teach your mind to seek out more healing experiences.

The healing journey can become lighter when shared with others on the same path but choose wisely your companions because their energy will affect yours. Read and listen only to words that nourish your spirit and help you to feel at ease, lean away from any that don’t. Compassion should flow to you and from you. Every act of kindness strengthens the thread that connects us to one another.

There comes a time when survival gives way to living. It’s a strong sign of healing your pain when your story expands beyond what happened. It expresses who you authentically are now: a person shaped by courage, tenderness, wisdom and love. The past is the landscape rather than the horizon. A sacred life does not ask for our perfection, it invites wholehearted presence and encompasses our authenticity, our humanity, our weakness, our foibles, our ingenuity and even our most tender dreams. One breath. One step. One prayer. One sunrise. Every moment of truth lived fully.

Let healing words in. Say to yourself; love guides every step I take, my soul remembers, the path has always existed, I am greatly loved, I accept myself, I forgive myself, I allow myself to heal. Good things can and do happen. The future doesn’t have to be the same as the past.

Each choice you make to heal brings you closer to the life that’s been waiting for you: peaceful, authentic, deeply rooted and beautifully, wholly, gloriously alive.

With love,

Jen 💜
